13 Igloos, Yurts & Gondolas That Were Made for Outdoor Dining

Published on January 13, 2024

Parade magazine has just featured The Preserve Resort & Spa's Hobbit Houses as one of the best outdoor dining experiences in the country!

Outdoor dining experiences in the form of igloos, yurts and greenhouses—even a Hobbit House—are everywhere these days. What started as a socially distant trend during the pandemic is still very much alive and well, offering diners weary of eating inside another alternative that dare we say, may be more fun in general.

Restaurants and hotels have gotten super creative lately with their seasonal dining rooms and al fresco seating arrangements, going all out with decor, especially for the holidays. I mean, what says holiday cheer more than a cozy little igloo bedecked in flannel and furs, with mini burners ablaze, ready for roasting s'mores? There's a reason this whimsical restaurant experience is here to stay and it's called: Instagram opportunities.

Hobbit Houses at The Preserve Resort & Spa (Richmond, Rhode Island)

Igloo dining is fun and all, but how about a 4-course meal in a real-life hobbit house? At The Preserve Resort & Spa, Rhode Island's finest sporting club, you can book one of three Maker’s Mark Hobbit Houses, each with a different vibe, decorations and one-of-a-kind experience complete with fine bourbon pairings. This magical, Bilbo Baggins-inspired setting is straight out of a storybook, with lush landscapes, tree trunk tables and well-worn paths that lead to intricately carved round wooden doors. Inside, you'll enjoy dishes like roasted pheasant with mustard greens, Maker's Mark braised shortribs with mashed potatoes and ginger salmon with glazed carrots before diving into cheesecake pops and s'mores around the fire pit under the stars.
